This article basically describes why I love old architecture. The history of what used to exist, why people changed things around, what was changed to accommodate new technologies or the disintegration of materials over time.

I’d love to work on historical narratives of missing space.

Hmm…

One of my favorite stories is how the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall became one of the most acoustically perfect spaces by accident. Also how there used to be an enormous (since replaced and barely any pieces remain) gas-powered chandelier that was so big, those in the balcony could barely see the stage and that when it was turned on, it would basically burst with light because of all the flames and the crystals that would refract those flames.

pug puppy in eames chair.

New ways to experience the rotunda via physical intervention? Okay. I love a good mesh landscape, and the solution he conjured is a good one—the inner spiral. It plays off the space, and of course pends itself to safe enjoyment (as safe as a trampoline can be anyway).

It seems a terribly depressing concept to suggest this as a replacement—rather than an addition to—human contact. It is however a realistic assumption that such a thing could be needed or useful in various settings and circumstances.

There is an unmistakable draw to the object. I cannot imagine anyone would not want to get close and touch it—no matter what emotional reaction it could produce. I was simultaneously drawn to it and also made uncomfortable by its “undulations.” To the extent at which they were fabricated by the camera is irrelevant. The purpose is to imply crawling—and it certainly does that.

I posted this photo to a NYT travel photo collection. My knee is sore, but not so bad overall.

Observation while walking home yesterday:

Water features have to be one of the most failed attempts at urban architecture beautification. Everyone loves a fountain, but they often seem to break down, or get abandoned. Re-appropriation of these spaces always seems to be similar: a hangout spot. I’m thinking of 3 locations: Washington Sq Park (though it’s been rehabbed now), Madison Square Park and the fountain near the Korean War memorial in Troy, NY. All three are now used by people as hangout spots—in the case of the Troy fountain, it’s a great stage for free concert.

:end observation

A random thought...

What about the start of cold weather is it that brings on serious food coma at lunch—regardless of what is eaten?
