This project gives me confirmation that it is possible for me to creative something i’d like to work on with conductive thread and soft circuits. Also a little bit of a push to start working on said project! Sewing machine and supplies, stat!

Oh and also it’s quite beautiful.

One of my favorite Land Art pieces. I really love how the Dia used simple tools to find a way to document this work. It makes it’s conservation that much more important. Perhaps that seems like an odd conclusion to attaching a digital camera to a weather balloon, but it’s a simple, brilliant and understated solution, just as the artwork itself is simple, brilliant and understated (in it’s enormity). Artwork—especially modern and contemporary artwork often comes with a need for an explanation. Ideas are sometimes great, but their translation falls short or vice versa (and gets shown regardless). This piece does speak for itself and that makes it all the more worthy.

Since I was a kid, I’ve always doodled spirals, and learning about this work was sort of a happy affirmation for me of my often unconscious mind-hand busywork while in classes or thinking about things (along with learning about the golden mean and fractals in math class of course).

A post about Barry Underwood’s photography. A show is opening this week in Oakland, CA. Wish I was there!

His land art/light photographs are like tiny wonderlands. I wish I could see these big and in person so I could sit and wonder for hours at a time.

This also reminds me of how much I miss photography and this landscape installation piece I thought about doing oh so many years ago. Now with the (not so new) advent of conductive thread and sewable LEDs, it’s possible. Now all I gotta do is do it. hmm…

headphones, they saved my life

I finally got a new pair of headphones. Grado SR60s. They’re the lowest of their line, but the sound is the best I’ve ever had, so while I listened to different sets, a couple “better”, the difference is minimal and I’ll enjoy all the music much more than I ever had. It’s like it’s live! Plus I get to look a little silly while wearing them. A plus to be sure. Ha.

This article basically describes why I love old architecture. The history of what used to exist, why people changed things around, what was changed to accommodate new technologies or the disintegration of materials over time.

I’d love to work on historical narratives of missing space.

Hmm…

One of my favorite stories is how the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall became one of the most acoustically perfect spaces by accident. Also how there used to be an enormous (since replaced and barely any pieces remain) gas-powered chandelier that was so big, those in the balcony could barely see the stage and that when it was turned on, it would basically burst with light because of all the flames and the crystals that would refract those flames.

New ways to experience the rotunda via physical intervention? Okay. I love a good mesh landscape, and the solution he conjured is a good one—the inner spiral. It plays off the space, and of course pends itself to safe enjoyment (as safe as a trampoline can be anyway).

there is this book, that i want, but i can’t recall the name of it, and i’ve searched through lists and lists on amazon using keywords relating to it, but nothing has come up. all i remember is what the cover looks like. i guess it’s time to hit the stores…
